Sonnen Battery Sydney

German-Engineered Home Battery Storage With Backup Built In

sonnen has been building smart home batteries in Germany for well over a decade, and its latest systems bring that engineering to Sydney homes in a cleaner, more flexible package. The new sonnenBatterie 12 combines a hybrid inverter, modular LFP storage and automatic backup power in one system, while the sonnenBatterie Evo offers a compact, outdoor-rated option that pairs with almost any existing solar setup.

Both systems are designed to do one job exceptionally well: capture your surplus daytime solar, hold it until the evening peak, and keep selected circuits running if the grid goes down. With a warranty that covers the inverter, power electronics, energy manager and battery modules together, sonnen suits homeowners who want long-term certainty rather than the cheapest kilowatt-hour.

Solar National designs and installs sonnen battery systems across Sydney with CEC-accredited installers, honest sizing advice and the federal battery rebate applied upfront, so you never have to claim it yourself.

What Our Clients Have To Say!

Why Choose a sonnen Battery

Premium German design, whole-system warranty cover and backup power as standard, built for Sydney homes that want dependable storage for the long haul.

Hybrid Flexibility

The sonnenBatterie 12 supports both AC and DC coupling. Add it to an existing solar system or build it into a new installation with solar panels connected straight to its hybrid inverter.

Best For

New solar and battery builds, growing households

Adding storage to an existing solar system

sonnenBatterie 12 is sonnen’s newest platform and the system we recommend for most new installations. Its hybrid inverter connects directly to your solar panels, and storage scales in 9.4 kWh steps as your household grows.

sonnenBatterie Evo is a fully integrated, all-in-one cabinet that pairs with most existing solar systems regardless of inverter brand. It is a tidy retrofit option for homes that already have solar and simply want to stop exporting cheap energy.

Not sure which suits your home? We review your existing system and energy usage, then recommend the model that fits. You can also compare sonnen with every brand in our solar battery range.

Is a sonnen Battery Right for Your Home?

A sonnen battery is a strong fit if you:

  • Want a premium, German-engineered system with whole-system warranty cover
  • Are adding a battery to existing solar and want to keep your current inverter
  • Value quiet operation for an indoor or near-living-area install
  • Want backup power included without add-on hardware
  • Like the idea of a manufacturer-run VPP with no retailer lock-in

Consider another brand if you:

  • Need more than 6 kW of continuous power to run large loads at once
  • Want the lowest possible cost per kilowatt-hour
  • Need a battery that connects across all three phases of a three-phase supply

Our job is to recommend the battery that suits your home, not simply the one on our list. If sonnen is not the best match, we will compare it with options such as BYD, AlphaESS, Growatt or Sungrow.

Installation

How We Install Your sonnen Battery

Most sonnen installations in Sydney are completed within one day once approvals are finalised.

Step 1: Usage and Solar Review
Share a recent electricity bill and details of any existing solar. We assess your evening consumption, tariff and export levels to recommend the right model and capacity.

Step 2: Site Inspection
We check your switchboard, phase supply, existing solar inverter and the best location for the battery, with attention to shade, ventilation and access.

Step 3: System Design
We design a DC-coupled sonnenBatterie 12 for new solar builds, or an AC-coupled Evo or sonnenBatterie 12 for existing systems, and select the backup circuits that matter most to you.

Step 4: Approvals and Rebate Paperwork
We lodge your network connection application with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy and complete all federal rebate documentation.

Step 5: Installation and Commissioning
Our team installs the battery stack and inverter, wires your backup circuits, sets the inverter output level and tests backup switch-over before we leave.

Step 6: App Setup and Handover
We connect your system to the sonnen App, explain your energy dashboard, and help you enrol in a VPP program if you choose to join one.

Government Rebates

Sonnen Battery Rebates in NSW

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Eligible batteries receive an upfront discount through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). For installations from 1 May 2026, the first 14 kWh of usable capacity attracts the full rate (currently around $252 per kWh), capacity between 14 and 28 kWh receives 60% of that rate, and capacity between 28 and 50 kWh receives 15%. A single-module sonnenBatterie 12 (9.4 kWh) sits entirely within the full-rate band. The rate steps down every six months, so installing sooner secures a higher discount. Read our full battery rebate guide.

NSW Virtual Power Plant Incentive (PDRS)

Connecting your battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant can unlock an additional NSW incentive under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, calculated on up to 28 kWh of usable capacity. We confirm which VPP pathway qualifies for your sonnen system and handle the paperwork at installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. sonnen is a German battery specialist headquartered in Wildpoldsried, Bavaria, with local sales, service and support in Australia. Its batteries use LFP chemistry, include backup power as standard and carry a 10-year warranty covering the entire system, which makes sonnen a strong choice for homeowners who prioritise reliability and long-term support.

The sonnenBatterie 12 is a hybrid system with its own inverter, supporting both AC and DC coupling and scaling from 9.4 to 28.2 kWh. The Evo is an all-in-one AC-coupled battery with 10 kWh of usable storage, designed mainly for adding a battery to existing solar.

Yes. Both models can be AC-coupled to an existing residential solar system, so you can keep your current inverter. We check your inverter’s age and compatibility during the site inspection.

Yes. Backup power is included as standard. The sonnenBatterie 12 switches selected circuits to battery power in under 50 milliseconds and can black start from battery and solar. How much you can run depends on the inverter output setting, up to 6 kW continuous, so we choose your backup circuits carefully during design.

The sonnenBatterie 12 delivers up to 6 kW continuous, with short surges up to 8.7 kVA for motor starts. That comfortably covers lights, fridges, internet, and a split-system air conditioner, but not every large appliance at once. Ducted air conditioning, electric hot water and EV charging are usually excluded from backup circuits.

Under the federal program, a 9.4 kWh sonnenBatterie 12 currently attracts around $2,370 off, and an 18.8 kWh system around $4,250, based on usable capacity. A VPP connection may add the NSW PDRS incentive on top. See our battery rebate guide for details.

sonnenConnect is sonnen’s own Virtual Power Plant program for sonnenBatterie owners. It pays regular credits for allowing sonnen to use part of your battery during grid demand events, and it does not tie you to a specific electricity retailer. Learn more on our Virtual Power Plant page.

Most Sydney households using 15 to 25 kWh per day suit a 9.4 or 10 kWh system. Larger families, pool owners and homes with EVs often benefit from 18.8 kWh or more. We size your system from your actual bills. Book a free consultation.

Yes. The sonnenBatterie 12 is modular and can grow from 9.4 kWh to 28.2 kWh by adding battery modules as your energy needs change.

sonnen provides a 10-year warranty covering the inverter, power electronics, energy manager and battery modules. For the sonnenBatterie 12, cover lasts 10 years, 10,000 cycles or 8,500 kWh of throughput per kWh of capacity, whichever comes first. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law also apply. If you ever need support, our warranty claim team can help.

Yes. The sonnenBatterie 12 is rated IP65 with an IP66 inverter, and the Evo is rated IP56. sonnen lists an optimal operating range of 15°C to 30°C, so we install on a shaded wall or in a garage to protect performance through Sydney summers.

sonnen’s current Australian models connect on a single phase. On a three-phase property, the battery can usually be connected to one phase, with backup limited to circuits on that phase. If you need full three-phase backup, we will recommend a three-phase battery instead.

No. The sonnenBatterie 12 battery stack uses natural convection cooling and operates at under 15 dB(A), making it one of the quietest home batteries available.

Installation is usually completed in a single day. Network approval and paperwork beforehand typically take one to two weeks, and we manage all of it for you.
