Fox ESS Battery Sydney

Why Is Fox ESS Growing So Fast in Australia?

Fox ESS was founded in 2019 as a subsidiary of Tsingshan Group the world’s largest producer of nickel giving the company direct upstream control over key battery cell materials. That supply chain advantage is a primary reason Fox ESS can deliver near-premium specifications at mid-market pricing without appearing to cut corners. The product quality is genuine, not a result of hidden compromises.

In Q4 2024, Fox ESS earned BloombergNEF Tier 1 manufacturer status a certification based on manufacturing scale, financial stability, and quality systems, not marketing. The company reached Forbes Global Unicorn status in May 2023 (valued over US$1 billion) and has shipped close to 100,000 batteries worldwide, placing it firmly in the top 10 battery brands in Australia by installed volume.

Fox ESS entered Australia in 2020, gained its first CEC battery approval in 2022, and now operates a local support office at 53 Willow Avenue, Springvale VIC 3171. Solar National supplies and installs the full current Australian range: the EQ4800, EP11 and CQ6 batteries, plus the new Power Cube all-in-one system, which pairs a built-in hybrid inverter with stackable EQ5500 battery modules.

Fox ESS EQ4800

Best for: Households wanting the best balance of scalability, value, and local track record

The Fox ESS EQ4800 is the flagship residential model and the most popular Fox ESS battery installed in Australia. It is a modular, high-voltage tower system made up of one Master Control Module (EQ4800-M) and up to eight Slave Modules (EQ4800-S). Each module contributes 4.66 kWh of nominal capacity, and the full nine-module (L9) configuration delivers 41.93 kWh in a single compact vertical stack.

The EQ4800 operates at high voltage up to approximately 403.2 V at full configuration which reduces current flow, minimises heat generation, and delivers verified round-trip efficiency of over 95%. It received CEC approval in November 2024 and has been growing rapidly in Australian installations since.

The “stackable brick” design means you can start with as little as two modules (9.32 kWh) and expand the stack later  though Solar National recommends sizing for your actual needs upfront to avoid the logistical complexity of post-installation expansion and to maximise your current federal rebate entitlement.

Model 2 — Fox ESS EP11

Best for: Households wanting a simpler, self-contained fixed-capacity unit

The Fox ESS EP11 is a non-modular, self-contained high-voltage battery system that integrates the battery cells and battery management unit into a single enclosure. Unlike the EQ4800’s stackable tower design, the EP11 is a fixed-capacity unit and additional capacity is added by connecting further EP11 units in parallel rather than stacking modules vertically.

Each EP11 unit provides 10.36 kWh of usable capacity, and systems can be expanded up to a maximum of 41.6 kWh in a parallel configuration. The EP11 suits households that have a clear target capacity in mind and want a clean, uncomplicated installation without modular planning. It is the right choice when space is limited horizontally but the target capacity is well defined.

Key Difference vs EQ4800: The EP11 expands horizontally via parallel units, while the EQ4800 stacks vertically. The EP11’s per-unit cost is higher on a per-kWh basis than the EQ4800 at equivalent capacity, but it offers a simpler installation in some property configurations.

Model 3 — Fox ESS CQ6

Best for: Buyers wanting maximum capacity, the longest warranty, built-in fire safety hardware, and Fox ESS’s most advanced platform

The Fox ESS CQ6 is the newest and most technically advanced battery in the Fox ESS Australian range. It received CEC approval in January 2026 and represents a significant upgrade over the EQ4800 in terms of energy density per module, safety features, and warranty duration.

Each CQ6 module delivers 5.99 kWh and the system can be configured from 2 modules (11.98 kWh) all the way to 14 modules per stack (83.86 kWh) one of the highest residential storage capacities available in Australia. When paired with the Fox ESS H3 Plus inverter, up to three stacks can be connected in parallel, enabling total system capacity of up to approximately 251.58 kWh for large commercial applications.

The CQ6 also includes a built-in aerosol fire extinguishing module, thermally activated at 170°C a dedicated internal fire suppression system that is an industry first at this price point and a meaningful safety upgrade over the EQ4800.

The warranty is 12 years the longest in the Fox ESS Australian range and among the best available from any battery brand in Australia.

Honest Note on Depth of Discharge: Fox ESS marketing for the CQ6 references 100% DoD. However, the official CQ6 datasheet (EN-CQ6 Datasheet AU v1.2, November 2025) specifies 90% DoD. This means a 5.99 kWh module has approximately 5.39 kWh of usable capacity, not the full 5.99 kWh. This difference compounds across larger systems. Always confirm exact usable capacity from the current datasheet with your Solar National installer before finalising your system design.

Model 4: Fox ESS Power Cube (All-in-One with EQ5500)

Best for: New solar and battery installs where you want the inverter, battery and whole-home backup in one tidy stack, with no separate gateway box on the wall

The Fox ESS Power Cube is the newest addition to the Fox ESS Australian line-up, and it works differently from the other three models on this page. The EQ4800, EP11 and CQ6 are batteries that connect to a separate Fox ESS hybrid inverter mounted on the wall. The Power Cube combines both: the hybrid inverter sits on top of the battery stack as its own module, so the entire system arrives as a single, floor-standing unit with no cabling run between inverter and battery.

The battery modules are the EQ5500, each holding 5.46 kWh at 100% depth of discharge. A Power Cube system takes between two and nine modules, giving a usable capacity range of 10.92 kWh to 49.14 kWh. Each module weighs under 40 kg, which makes handling on installation day considerably easier than heavier battery formats.

Two inverter versions to suit your home’s supply:

  • PQ1 single-phase: 5 kW, 8 kW, 10 kW or 12 kW, with up to four MPPTs at 20 A per string. Well suited to larger modern panels and roofs with multiple orientations.
  • PQ3 three-phase: 5 kW, 10 kW or 15 kW, with three MPPTs at 20 A per string, for homes and small businesses on a three-phase supply.

Whole-Home Backup Built In

This is the Power Cube’s biggest practical difference. Most battery systems that offer whole-home backup need an external gateway or backup box, extra AC and communication wiring, and more wall space. The Power Cube has an internal automatic transfer switch with a 63 A bypass, and Fox ESS specifies a 4 ms switchover when the grid drops out. In practical terms, lights, appliances and Wi-Fi keep running through an outage without the household noticing the changeover. Backup still has to be designed correctly at your switchboard, but there is no additional backup hardware to buy.

Built-In Battery Heating

LFP batteries cannot charge efficiently below 0°C. The EQ5500 modules include a built-in heating function, managed through the FoxCloud 2.0 app, where you can set start and end temperatures and schedule warm-up during cheaper tariff windows. For homes in the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Canberra region or anywhere the garage drops close to freezing overnight, this keeps the battery ready to charge on cold winter mornings.

Two Levels of Battery Safety

Every EQ5500 module has an insulation layer between cells to stop heat spreading from one cell to its neighbours, plus an industry-grade pressure relief valve on each module. The inverter adds AFCI arc-fault detection and Type II DC and AC surge protection.

Smart Features and VPP Ready

The Power Cube has built-in WLAN (with 4G readiness for the future), CT self-check during commissioning, dry contact control and support for AI-driven energy management and Virtual Power Plant participation through FoxCloud. Single-phase systems use an RJ45 dual-CT meter and three-phase systems use a 6-CT meter.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the EQ4800 if you want the best value-per-kWh, a growing real-world track record in Australian conditions, and the flexibility to choose any capacity from 9.32 kWh to 41.93 kWh.

Choose the EP11 if you have a clear capacity target around 10 or 20 kWh, want a self-contained unit without modular planning, and your installation space suits a horizontal rather than vertical configuration.

Choose the CQ6 if you need maximum storage capacity (above 42 kWh), want the longest warranty in the Fox ESS range (12 years), and value the added safety of the built-in fire suppression system. Be aware it is the newest Australian model and has less local performance history than the EQ4800.

Choose the Power Cube if you are installing solar and battery together, want whole-home blackout protection without paying for a separate backup gateway, and prefer one clean floor-standing unit instead of a wall-mounted inverter plus a battery stack. As the newest Fox ESS platform in Australia, it has the shortest local track record of the range.

What Every Fox ESS Battery in Our Range Has in Common

LiFePO4 Chemistry — The Safest Battery Technology Every Fox ESS battery available in Australia uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 / LFP) chemistry. This is the safest commercially available battery chemistry for home installation. LFP cells do not undergo the thermal runaway reactions that have caused fires in older lithium-ion battery technologies. For any battery installed in a garage, utility room, or living area, this is the single most important safety specification to look for and all three Fox ESS Australian models have it.

IP65 Weather Rating — Install It Anywhere All three models EQ4800, EP11, and CQ6 carry an IP65 ingress protection rating. This means they are completely dust-tight and protected against water jets, making them suitable for garage walls, outdoor utility areas, under carports, or fully exposed external walls. No additional weatherproof enclosure is required for outdoor installation, which simplifies the install and reduces cost. The Power Cube inverter section is rated even higher at IP66.

Over 95% Round-Trip Efficiency When you charge a battery, some energy is always lost to heat and internal resistance during the charge and discharge cycle. Fox ESS batteries recover over 95% of every kWh stored meaning if you put in 10 kWh from your solar panels, you get at least 9.5 kWh back out. This is among the best efficiency ratings available in the Australian market.

≥6,000 Cycle Life All Fox ESS Australian models are rated for a minimum of 6,000 charge and discharge cycles. For a household cycling the battery once per day, this translates to more than 16 years of daily operation well beyond the warranty period. At end of warranty, the battery is guaranteed to retain at least 70% of its original capacity.

FoxCloud 2.0 Monitoring All three models are monitored and managed through the FoxCloud 2.0 platform, available as a mobile app (iOS and Android) and a web portal. Real-time visibility of solar generation, battery state of charge, grid import/export, and household consumption is available at all times. FoxCloud also supports integration with selected Virtual Power Plant (VPP) providers for additional bill savings. For technically capable owners, Fox ESS batteries have a well-developed Home Assistant community integration a genuine advantage over more closed-ecosystem competitors.

CEC Approved — All Three Models CEC approval is not optional. It is required for eligibility under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate, for connection applications to your Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP), and for compliance with AS/NZS 5139 installation standards. The EQ4800, EP11, and CQ6 are all CEC approved and can be verified on the Clean Energy Council’s current approved product list.

Federal Rebate Eligible All three Fox ESS Australian models qualify for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, introduced on 1 July 2025. The rebate is calculated on usable battery capacity up to 50 kWh and is applied directly off your installation invoice — no separate claim required.

Fox ESS Battery Federal Rebate — What You Get in 2025–2026

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount on eligible battery installations via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The rebate is applied off your invoice at the time of installation by Solar National.

Key Facts:

  • Approximately 30% off upfront cost in the first year
  • Calculated on usable capacity up to 50 kWh
  • Applies to on-grid batteries installed with new or existing solar
  • Not means-tested — available to all eligible households regardless of income
  • The system must be physically installed and commissioned (not just booked) to lock in the current rate

Does the Fox ESS Battery Provide Blackout Protection?

This is one of the most important things to understand before purchasing any Fox ESS battery — and it is something competitors often gloss over.

The answer depends on which Fox ESS system you choose. The EQ4800, EP11 and CQ6 are storage batteries. They do not power your home during a blackout unless the system has been specifically designed for backup with a compatible Fox ESS hybrid inverter and dedicated backup wiring.

The Power Cube is the exception. It includes an internal automatic transfer switch with a 63 A bypass, so whole-home backup is built into the system rather than added through a separate gateway enclosure. Your switchboard still needs to be wired correctly for backup, but there is no extra backup hardware to purchase.

For the EQ4800, EP11 or CQ6, blackout protection requires:

  • A compatible Fox ESS hybrid inverter with EPS (Emergency Power Supply) function enabled
  • A dedicated backup circuit at your switchboard, wired back to the inverter’s backup output
  • Switchboard modifications — typically 5 available breaker spaces are required
  • Clear agreement at the design stage about which circuits will be backed up (typically essential loads: fridge, lights, internet, key power points)

Backup protection does not cover your entire home by default. A priority-circuits approach is standard — your installer identifies the circuits you most need during an outage and connects those specifically. Full whole-home backup is possible in some configurations but requires careful design.

If backup power is important to you, tell Solar National at your first consultation. This must be designed into the system from the start it cannot be added casually later.

What to Expect When Solar National Installs Your Fox ESS Battery

DC-Coupled — Fox ESS Inverter Required All three Fox ESS Australian battery models (EQ4800, EP11, CQ6) are DC-coupled systems. They connect directly to your solar array through a compatible Fox ESS hybrid inverter. This is different from AC-coupled batteries (like some Tesla Powerwall configurations) that sit alongside an existing inverter.

Power Cube owners skip this step. Because the hybrid inverter is built into the Power Cube stack, there is no separate inverter to select or mount. If you already have a non-Fox inverter, Solar National will advise whether a Power Cube or a standalone Fox ESS battery and inverter combination is the better fit for your existing system.

If your home already has a non-Fox inverter, you will need to factor a Fox ESS hybrid inverter into your total system cost. If you are installing solar and battery together for the first time, the inverter and battery are designed as a single integrated system and this is where the DC-coupled approach delivers its best efficiency.

Compatible Inverters for Each Australian Battery Model:

Installation Steps:

Step 1 — Site Assessment Solar National visits your property to assess your grid phase (single or three-phase), available wall or floor space, conduit routing, switchboard capacity, and floor structure. For EQ4800-L9 systems, floor reinforcement requirements are confirmed at this stage.

Step 2 — System Design We size the battery model and configuration to your actual energy usage — not a generic average. We confirm whether backup circuits are required, check DNSP export limits, and produce a compliant system design.

Step 3 — Installation Day Your CEC-accredited installer mounts the battery, installs the Fox ESS hybrid inverter, completes all DC and AC wiring to AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 5139 standards, and completes any switchboard modifications required.

Step 4 — Commissioning FoxCloud 2.0 is set up on your phone on installation day. We configure charge/discharge schedules, set grid export limits, enable backup circuits (if included), and run a full system test including a switchover test if EPS is fitted.

Step 5 — Rebate & Warranty Registration Solar National handles all STC rebate paperwork and submits your Fox ESS warranty registration within the recommended timeframe. You receive a full commissioning pack including compliance certificates, warranty documentation, and datasheet.

What owners consistently highlight:

  • Competitive price per kWh versus premium alternatives
  • Reliable day-to-day operation once commissioned
  • FoxCloud app rated as clear and functional
  • Home Assistant integration well-regarded by technical users
  • Reduced electricity bills from first billing cycle

What to be aware of before buying:

  • Fox ESS is newer in Australia than Tesla, Sungrow, or BYD – track record is growing but not yet decades long
  • Backup/EPS is not automatic – must be specified at design stage
  • Post-installation module expansion is logistically complex – size correctly from the start
  • CQ6 is very new locally (CEC approved January 2026) – early adopter consideration applies
  • Power Cube is the newest Fox ESS platform in Australia, so local long-term performance data is still building

Frequently Asked Questions

Solar National installs four Fox ESS systems in Australia: the EQ4800 (CEC approved November 2024), the EP11 (approved since 2022), the CQ6 (CEC approved January 2026) and the new Power Cube all-in-one, which uses EQ5500 battery modules listed by the CEC in June 2026. All are eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program when installed by a CEC-accredited installer.

The EQ4800 is modular and stackable (4.66 kWh per module, up to 41.93 kWh) with a 10-year warranty — it is the most popular and best-value option for most Australian homes. The EP11 is a non-modular self-contained unit (10.36 kWh per unit, up to 41.6 kWh via parallel connection) suited to fixed-capacity installations. The CQ6 is the premium new model (5.99 kWh per module, up to 83.86 kWh per stack) with a 12-year warranty and built-in fire suppression — the most advanced but also the newest and most expensive option.

The EQ4800 and EP11 series average approximately $832 per installed kWh nationally — among the lowest for any CEC-approved battery in Australia. A full EQ4800-L9 (41.93 kWh) system costs approximately $27,000–$32,000 before the federal rebate, which at current rates reduces this by approximately $13,000–$13,800. Contact Solar National for a personalised quote with exact rebate figures for your system size and state.

Not by default. All three Australian Fox ESS models support backup/EPS functionality but require a compatible Fox ESS hybrid inverter with EPS, a dedicated backup circuit at the switchboard, and switchboard modifications. This must be designed into the system from the start. Tell Solar National during your consultation if blackout protection is a priority — we will design and quote for it specifically.

Fox ESS batteries are DC-coupled and require a compatible Fox ESS hybrid inverter. If your existing solar system uses a different inverter brand (e.g., Fronius, SolarEdge, SMA, or Sungrow), you will need to factor a Fox ESS inverter into the system cost. In some cases an AC-coupled approach may be more practical — Solar National will assess your existing setup and advise the most cost-effective path.

The EQ4800 and EP11 carry a 10-year product and performance warranty in Australia. The CQ6 carries a 12-year product and performance warranty. All models guarantee at least 70% remaining capacity at the end of the warranty period. Warranty validity requires CEC-accredited installation, product registration (recommended within 6 weeks of install), and adherence to Fox ESS maintenance guidelines. Solar National handles warranty registration as part of every installation.

The EQ4800 width (570 mm) and depth (380 mm) are constant across all configurations. Height varies with the number of modules: from 386 mm for a two-module (L2) system up to 1,352 mm for the full nine-module (L9) stack. The full L9 weighs approximately 356.5 kg and requires a reinforced concrete base. See the full dimensions table above.

Yes. All three Fox ESS Australian models — EQ4800, EP11, and CQ6 — are eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate from 1 July 2025. The rebate is applied directly off your invoice by Solar National. For a full EQ4800-L9 (41.93 kWh), the current rebate is approximately $13,000–$13,800. Rebate rates are proposed to change from 1 May 2026. Contact Solar National to confirm current rates at the time of your quote.

The Power Cube is an all-in-one home energy system that combines a Fox ESS hybrid inverter and stackable EQ5500 LFP battery modules in a single floor-standing unit. It is available in single-phase (5 to 12 kW) and three-phase (5 to 15 kW) versions, with storage from 10.92 kWh to 49.14 kWh.

Yes. The Power Cube includes an internal automatic transfer switch with a 63 A bypass, allowing whole-home backup without a separate gateway. Fox ESS specifies a 4 ms switchover, so most households will not notice the change when the grid fails. Backup wiring at the switchboard is still designed and installed by Solar National.

Both are stackable high-voltage LFP modules with 100% depth of discharge and a 10-year warranty. The EQ5500 holds 5.46 kWh per module compared with 4.66 kWh for the EQ4800, so a full nine-module EQ5500 stack reaches 49.14 kWh against 41.93 kWh. The EQ5500 is the battery used in the Power Cube all-in-one system.

Yes. The EQ5500 modules have a built-in heating function controlled through the FoxCloud 2.0 app, so the battery can warm itself before charging when temperatures drop near freezing.
